For the past few months, I have been querying, hoping to get an agent to represent one of my books. So far, I estimate that I've received at least thirty rejections. At first, it was disheartening, having really poured myself into my novels. But then I learned that only 1-2% of the total number of people doing what I'm doing get selected each year.
Psychologically, getting rejected can wear on you after a while. You begin to think that your work isn't good enough. Then I heard about some of the best-selling authors and how they got rejected numerous times before they made it. Getting an agent is not impossible, but it sure seems that way. But I realize it's a very subjective business.
I can't help but think that there is some "chance" involved in getting selected by a Literary Agent. Perhaps timing is also a factor.
Regardless of whether I ever get a book published traditionally, I will continue to write. I want to continue writing. I have to continue writing. Writing, to me, is salvation.
If you're an author and have been querying, I'd love to hear about your experience. Email me at trevorcarterva@gmail.com.
